This pair of new films presents two very different views of Sámi sisterhood from two separate countries and the two ends of the age spectrum.
Me and My Little Sister (Sparrooabbán) – Suvi West, Finland/Norway, 2016 (68min, Sámi, Finnish, English and Norwegian with English subtitles) / Documentary.
Finnish documentary Me and My Little Sister introduces us to Kaisa, the younger sister of actor and filmmaker Suvi West. Kaisa is Sámi, a Christian deacon and an out lesbian. But, despite the visceral homophobia she experiences from her native community in northern Finland, she is keen to remain there in order to stand up to – and hopefully even affect – its prevailing conservatism.
Northern Great Mountain (Stoerre Vaerie) – Amanda Kernell, Sweden, 2015 (15m, Swedish and Sámi with English subtitles)
Northern Great Mountain focusses on 78-year-old Elle, a native-born Sámi woman who now identifies as Swedish. Reluctantly returning north for her sister’s funeral, she realises that her son has planned for them stay with relatives over night. Amanda Kernell’s engrossing short film shows in microcosm all the promise now being realised in her first feature, Sámi Blood, which has been taking this year’s Sundance and Berlin film festivals by storm.
