Sol

Marie-Hélène Cousineau & Susan Avingaq – Canada, 2014 (76min, English and Inuktitut with English subtitles) / Documentary

Sol explores the life of a young Inuk artist, Solomon Tapatiaq Uyarasuk, whose death in police custody is officially ruled as suicide (albeit under suspicious circumstances). This moving documentary pays tribute to Sol‘s promising and tragically short career whilst also shedding light on the social issues which have led to Canada’s North claiming one of the highest youth suicide rates in the world.

+ short: Sámi Boy (Sámi Bojá) – Elle Sofe Henriksen, Norway, 2015 (9min, Sámi with English subtitles)

Young reindeer herder Mikkel presents the image of a stoic Sámi male. But his tough exterior hides inner chaos.

This screening is presented in partnership with the Mental Health Foundation.
